USM Faculty and Researchers Receive Best Poster Award in International Rubber Conference

The poster entitled, “New Colletotrichum species infecting rubber in the Philippines and the potential of endophytic fungi as biocontrol agent against the pathogen” was awarded Best Poster during the International Rubber Conference 2023 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on February 22, 2023. The conference was organized by the International Rubber Research Development Board (IRRDB) and the Malaysian Rubber Board.

The winning poster is an output of the research project entitled โ€œScreening of Potential Endophytes as Biocontrol Agent Against Major and Emerging Leaf Diseases of Rubber” funded by the Department of Science and Technology -Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Developmentย (DOST-PCAARRD) with Dr. Tamie C. Solpot as project leader. With him are Dr. Ma. Teodora N. Cabasan, Bernadith T. Borja, Melesa M. Prado and Jomarie V. Abubakar. The team successfully identified Colletotrichum species consistently infecting rubber trees in North Cotabato, and conducted pathogenicity tests of the isolated Colletotrichum pathogens in rubber plants. Their research produced the first report of the pathogen on rubber in the Philippines, from which mitigation strategies to avoid disease outbreak can be recommended.
