The University of Southern Mindanao is a premier educational institution in Central Mindanao located at Kabacan, Cotabato. It was formerly known as the Mindanao Institute of Technology which was established on June 20, 1952 by virtue of Republic Act 763. It was upgraded to the University status pursuant to Presidential Decree 1312 on March 13, 1978 and has then maintained up to the present. Being what is the University of Southern Mindanao now is attributed to the effort of late Bai Matabay Plang Pendatun  who masterminded its establishment upon seeing the need for a school in this particular area and benefit those who needs education.

The USM is strategically nestled on a 1,024 hectare main campus along the Davao-Cotabato-Bukidnon junction. Located north in the heart of Kabacan, Cotabato more or less 600 meters from the main thoroughfare. It is 104 kilometers from General Santos City and 196 kilometers away from Cagayan de Oro City.
