As a research university, the University of Southern Mindanao prioritizes research and faculty development. Under the leadership of University President Dr. Francisco Gil N. Garcia, faculty members are provided opportunities to undertake and complete master’s or doctorate degrees in their chosen fields of specialization in universities across the Philippines and the globe.

The 2023 Research Colloquium Series shall feature lectures from faculty members who have completed their graduate degrees and have returned to the University. The activity aims to provide a venue for these faculty members to share what they have learned from their research. It will highlight the wide range of disciplines of interest and expertise of USM faculty.

The first set of lectures will be conducted on January 27, 2023 at 1:00 pm via hybrid mode. Participants may listen live on-site, or through a livestream or recording to be made available on USM’s RDE facebook page. The two presenters are Dr. Mary Joy S. Cañolas and Dr. Elorde S. Crispolon, Jr., both of the College of Agriculture.

Dr. Cañolas finished her Doctor of Philosophy in Rural Development in 2013 at USM, and PhD in Animal Science in 2017, specializing in Animal Breeding, with a minor in Genetics at the University of the Philippines Los Baños. She studied the genetic and phenotypic characteristics, and combining abilities of growth, laying, and egg quality traits of Philippine Mallard Duck Select lines, now Itik Pinas. She will be lecturing on the Phenotypic characteristics and egg quality of Philippine mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus L.) select lines and crosses.

Dr. Crispolon earned his Master of Science degree with major in Entomology specializing in Insect Taxonomy and Systematics at the University of the Philippines Los Baños under the Department of Science and Technology Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (DOST-ASTHRDP) scholarship program. He also finished his PhD in Systematics specializing in Entomology at the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle (MNHN) or National Musuem of Natural History, Paris France under the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) PHILFRANCE scholarship program. He will lecture on the biodiversity and historical evolution of Cercopidae (Insecta-Hemiptera).
