The Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology (PFST), in partnership with the University of Southern Mindanao (USM), successfully conducted a two-day teacher training program on April 24–25, 2026 at the USM Graduate School, aimed at capacitating non-Science major teachers handling science subjects in Kidapawan City through innovative, learner-centered approaches using Philippine Science Centrum (PSC) Exhibit-Based Lessons and the Lab-in-a-Box, following the formalization of their collaboration through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).

The training was implemented in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) SOCCSKSARGEN, through the Provincial Science and Technology Office–Cotabato, and the Department of Education (DepEd) Region XII Schools Division Office of Kidapawan City, highlighting a multi-agency effort to strengthen science education in the region.

As an accredited Continuing Professional Development (CPD) provider of the Professional Regulation Commission, USM secured approval for eight CPD units for the program—marking the first time that PFST training has been granted such accreditation.

Elementary and secondary teachers from various schools in Kidapawan City, along with participants from the University Laboratory School, actively engaged in hands-on activities and science demonstrations utilizing PSC exhibits and the Lab-in-a-Box kit composed of practical and readily available materials. Through interactive sessions, participants deepened their understanding of scientific concepts and explored strategies to make lessons more engaging and relevant to learners.

The training was led by Professor Corazon S. Salumbides, a Balik Scientist and resident Science Educator of PFST, who served as the chief trainer and resource person.

The opening program was attended by key officials, including Governor Emmylou “Lala” Taliño-Mendoza, represented by Ex-Officio Board Member and Provincial SK Federation President Hon. Karen Mitchie De Guzman; USM President Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel; DOST Regional Director Engr. Sammy P. Malawan; DOST-Cotabato Provincial Director Dr. Michael Mayo; DepEd Kidapawan City Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Miguel Fillalan; USM Vice President for Research, Development and Extension Dr. Debbie Marie B. Verzosa; and Education Program Supervisor Dr. Antonio Pasigado.

Faculty members from the USM Graduate School also served as facilitators, including Dr. Debbie Marie B. Verzosa (Program Head, MAEd Elementary Education and partnership focal person), Gerlie E. Tube (Program Head, MAEd Science Education), Jean R. Maganaka (Program Head, MST Physics), Queennie L. Rufino (Program Head, MST Chemistry), and Karizza Jane Pejaner-Manangkil (USM Palma Campus). The team facilitated sessions and developed supplementary assessment activities to deepen participants’ understanding of the scientific concepts underlying the laboratory exercises.

Through this initiative, USM, in collaboration with PFST and partner agencies, continues to advance its commitment to improving the quality of science education by equipping teachers with practical tools and innovative teaching strategies, particularly for those teaching outside their field of specialization.
