Following the success of its inaugural session, the University of Southern Mindanao (USM)—Department of Psychology continued its commitment to social transformation through the extension project, “Pathways to Reintegration: Empowering Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) Through Skills Training and Personal Development,” on April 17, 2026, at the Kabacan District Jail.

The second round focused specifically on a Mental Health Awareness Workshop, aiming to provide PDLs with the psychological resilience and emotional tools necessary for both their current situation and their eventual return to society.

The workshop was spearheaded by Component Leader Prof. Jerose V. Llorente, who facilitated a discussion on Vipassana Meditation, a mindfulness practice centered on self-awareness and emotional regulation. The session was followed by a comprehensive lecture featuring Prof. Ma. Angelika T. Balunga, who introduced Expressive Arts Therapy—an approach that allows participants to use artistic activities to process personal struggles and express emotions that are often difficult to verbalize.

The one-day activity concluded with an open dialogue, allowing participants to share reflections, voice personal realizations, and discuss healthy ways of coping with their unique challenges in a safe and supportive environment.

Complementing both the workshops and the dialogue, the initiative served as a holistic bridge toward emotional healing and psychological preparedness. This ensured that participants were equipped not only with practical life skills but also with the internal strength and self-worth necessary to successfully navigate the journey of reintegration into society.
