The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) celebrated its 2026 Founding Anniversary on October 1 at the University Auditorium, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

The celebration opened with the Kanduli, a floral offering honoring USM founder Hadja Bai  Fatima Matabay Namli Plang. 

The anniversary celebration also honored USM graduates who made significant contributions to their respective fields and communities through the Outstanding Alumni, Distinguished Alumni, and Most Outstanding Alumni awards.

The following alumni received awards during the program.

Romeo F. Hechanova, President and CEO of Evo Gene Seeds Corp., joined the celebration as Guest of Honor and Speaker. In his speech, he shared stories from his early days working in Japan, how he eventually found his way into business, and the journey that led him back to the Philippines to build and lead his own company. He also looked back on his years at the University.

“My first time on the grounds of this University was 54 years ago. My walking, jogging, and running on these grounds lasted for four years,” he shared.

Hechanova graduated from USM in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, major in Agronomy.

The event brought together mayors and local leaders from municipalities hosting USM campuses, members of the Founder’s family, USM alumni, faculty members and staff, students, guests, partners, and other members of the USM community. 

With the theme “One USM: United by Legacy, Driven by Excellence, Inspired by Innovation,” the celebration paid tribute to USM’s legacy, recognized the achievements of its alumni, and looked toward the university’s future.
