In a momentous event, the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) and the Iranun Peace and Development Council (IPADC) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on March 4, 2024, at Hilltop, Sitio Marayag, Brgy. Bayanga Norte, Matanog, Maguindanao del Norte. This occasion marks a significant step forward in promoting sustainable development and peace in Maguindanao del Sur through collaborative efforts.

The IPADC, representing five municipalities within the Iranun Corridor, has long been dedicated to improving the quality of life and fostering peace in the region. With support from stakeholders, including the Marine Battalion Landing Team-5, the council has worked tirelessly to implement peace development programs effectively.

Meanwhile, the University of Southern Mindanao (USM), located in Kabacan, Cotabato, is known for its academic excellence and community engagement. Committed to key functions such as instruction, research, extension, and production, the university aims to leverage its expertise for the benefit of partner communities.

Under the MOU, both parties agreed to collaborate on empowering Bangsamoro communities through community-based farming initiatives. IPADC will oversee project coordination and community mobilization, while USM will provide technical expertise, capacity building, and research and development support.

The highlight of the event was the official signing of the MOU by Hon. Cahar P. Ibay, IPADC Chairperson, and Dr. Debbie Marie B. Verzosa, Vice President for Research, Development & Extension at USM. Their signatures symbolize a concrete commitment to mutual cooperation and shared goals, laying the groundwork for impactful initiatives.

Looking ahead, both parties outlined actionable steps and a roadmap for implementation, aiming to create lasting positive change and uplift the livelihoods of Bangsamoro communities. The signing of the MOU between USM and IPADC signifies a significant milestone in the journey towards sustainable development and peace in Maguindanao del Sur. With a shared vision and commitment, the partnership holds promise for unlocking new opportunities, empowering communities, and fostering enduring prosperity.
