In line with advancing long-term environmental planning, the activity titled, “Anticipating Tomorrow: Strategic Foresight for Columbio’s Environmental Future” took place on April 17–18 at Balay Silangan, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), Columbio, Sultan Kudarat.
The University of Southern Mindanao and MENRO Columbio jointly organized the activity to strengthen future-oriented environmental planning under the banner of “Bionihan para sa Kalikasan in Columbio.” MENRO staff, headed by Mr. Lauro V. Domondon, MPA, together with the BIOnihan team—Dr. Florence Roy P. Salvaña, Dr. Cherie Cano-Mangaoang, and Prof. Bryan Lloyd P. Bretaña—participated in the activity.
The program featured a comprehensive review of past extension initiatives and conducted workshops that guided participants in crafting a shared mission and vision for Columbio’s environmental future.
Prof. Bretaña facilitated discussions and led participants in identifying existing environmental challenges, assessing their impacts, and proposing strategic interventions. The program also highlighted the application of backcasting, a strategic planning approach in which participants envisioned an ideal future and worked backward to determine actionable steps in the present.
The sessions emphasized the protection of critical sites through potential recognition as UNESCO World Heritage Sitesand strengthened cooperation between MENRO Columbio and the University of Southern Mindanao, reinforcing their unified commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
