The University of Southern Mindanao Satellite Socio-Economic Research and Data Analytics Center ( USM Satellite SERDAC) conducted the MeWrite RIDE: Mentoring and Writeshop in Research, Innovation, Development, and Extension (RIDE) for faculty members of the College of Business, Development Economics and Management (CBDEM). The two-day activity was held on May 6–7, 2026 at the Lope E. Dapun Building, CBDEM, USM Kabacan, Cotabato.

Organized by the USM Satellite SERDAC, the writeshop aimed to strengthen the research and extension capabilities of faculty members through mentoring, technical guidance, and structured support in proposal development. The activity also focused on improving proposal design and helping faculty members align their submissions with funding priorities and research directions.

Faculty members from different departments of the college worked on research and extension proposals. Discussions focused on proposal writing, funding requirements, and ways to develop stronger project concepts. As an output of the writeshop, each department presented research and extension proposals.

According to Dr. Romiel John P. Basan, the center head of USM Satellite SERDAC, the activity was organized in response to the university’s call for more funded research and extension projects.

“This activity was really designed to answer the university’s call for more proposals for funding,” Basan said. “Many faculty members already know research, but writing a proposal for funding is different. It requires another level of preparation and understanding.”

He also shared that CBDEM continues to encourage more faculty members to become involved in research and extension work, especially since the college still has a limited number of active faculty researchers.

For the 2027 funding cycle, the submitted 10 proposals, exceeding its expected target.

Meanwhile, Dr. Cheryl Y. Dulay, the Dean of the college, said the writeshop gave faculty members an opportunity to improve their proposal-writing skills and become more engaged in research and extension work.

“This venue will really encourage faculty members to make proposals,” Dulay said. “Almost 50 percent of our faculty members are already involved in research and projects, but there are still departments that find proposal writing challenging.”

She added that some proposals had already been prepared and shortlisted even before the writeshop began. Dulay expressed hope that the activity would encourage faculty members to become more active in research and extension initiatives.

“Kailangan talaga mag-level up kami because of the growing demands in accreditation and the current trend where research and extension are being looked for by many institutions,” she ended.
