Soil Health Takes Center Stage At Major Agusan Summit
December 3, 2025
Dr. Jurhamid C. Imlan, Director of the University of Southern Mindanao Research and Development Center (USMARDC), received the Best Oral Paper Award under the Crop Harvesting and Management Category during the International Rubber Conference and Annual Meeting held on December 2, 2025, at the Royale Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Dr. Imlan’s team study focused on measuring the dry rubber yield of 12 rubber clones under different tapping methods:
• S2D2 – Half Spiral Cut Every 2 Days (Conventional Practice)
• S2D3 – Half Spiral Cut Every 3 Days (Low Frequency)
• S2D4 – Half Spiral Cut Every 4 Days (Low Frequency)
Key Findings:
- The S2D3 tapping method consistently produced the highest dry rubber yield among the three tapping methods across all quarters (January- December 2023)
- S2D3 is a moderate tapping frequency balances latex extraction with physiological recovery, preventing bark depletion
- The top rubber clones USM 1, PB260, RRIM 2025, RRIM 3001 and RRIT 251 showed consistent high yields and vigorous latex metabolism and strong adaptability to local climatic conditions.
Dr. Imlan’s achievements, along with his teammates to wit, Sheena B. Lucena, Abubakar Murray, Romulo L. Cena, and Efren E. Magulama, highlights USM’s strong commitment to research that supports the rubber industry and helps farmers improve their harvest and income.
The event gathered participants and directors of different rubber participating countries, including India, Cambodia, Myanmar, Ivory Coast, France, Ghana, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Romania and the Philippines. The conference showcased 70 research papers (56 oral presentations and 14 posters).

Likewise, MOU will be forged with IRRDB and conferment by IRRDB- USM as an associate member of IRRDB tomorrow at IRRDB headquarters, Kuala Lumpur led by the IRRDB Secretary General Dato Seri Abdul Aziz s.a. Kadir.
