The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) ranked first for Best Model Canvas in the Young Farmers Challenge (YFC) Intercollegiate Competition of the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office XII (DA-RFO XII) as announced by the Agri-Tayo SOCCSKSARGEN on October 11, 2023. 

Second year students from the College of Agriculture namely, Venjie V. Mencias, Samuel M. Cordova, Jr., and Datu Basser Abdullah, represented the university through a technology pitching on September 28, 2023, in Koronadal City. Dubbed Y’Nut Gift from Nuts, the enterprise produced products from peanuts to wit: chip nuts, coconuts, crunch nuts, oilnuts, and peanupolvoron. As regional winners, they will receive a financial grant from DA worth 150,00 as start-up capital for their agri-enterprise. 

According to Dr. Ardniel A. Baladjay, dean of the College of Agriculture (CA), the former YFC winners, now enrolled students of the university, worked with the three participants to devise the best strategies for winning the contest. 

“We will now integrate these innovations of students in their thesis and the research, development, and community engagement initiative of the college.” He underscored. 

Ms. Karen Mae C. Daguro, the General Manager of Polo Samahang Nayon MPC, Dr. Keno Jay M. Balogbog, the Director for Extension of the Mindanao State University- General Santos City, Mr. Artemio C. Del Rosario, the TESDA Specialist of TESDA XII, Mr. John Lord L. Auman, the Information Officer II of the DA- Agricultural Training Institute XII, and Ms. Cecilia A. Parcon, the Chief of the Planning Section of DA- RFO XII were the panel of adjudicators of the competition. 

Championed by the Honorable Senator Imee R. Marcos, the YFC Intercollegiate Competition is a competitive grant program designed to inspire the younger generation to recognize farming and fisheries as promising career avenues. It revolves around the Business Model Canvas, focusing on innovative start-up ventures in the agri-fishery enterprise that prioritize income generation and sustainability.
