Kabacan, Cotabato – The University of Southern Mindanao (USM), through the Sentro ng Wika at Kultura (SWK) led by Dr. Radji A. Macatabon and the Gender and Development (GAD) Office, participated in the Second Webinar Series on Sign Language on August 12, 2025, at the USM Extension Services Training and Conference Room in Kabacan, Cotabato.

The event was spearheaded by the Commission on the Filipino Language (KWF) as part of the Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa 2025 celebration with the theme “Paglinang sa Filipino at Katutubong Wika: Makasaysayan sa Pagkakaisa ng Bansa.”

The discussion focused on “The Role of Filipino Sign Language (FSL) in Climate Change” and was presented by Ms. Carolyn B. Digani, a Filipino Sign Language Specialist and Deaf Relay Interpreter. Students from the Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and first-year Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Filipino were among the participants.

The webinar aimed to raise awareness on the importance of Filipino and indigenous languages, including FSL, as vital tools for inclusive communication and social advocacy.

“Maraming mga deaf ang napa-iiwanan dahil hindi nila alam ang mga senyas na ginagamit, kaya kailangan natin silang turuan,” shared co-host and FSL interpreter Edna B. Comia, emphasizing the need to make information accessible to the Deaf community.

By highlighting the intersection of language, inclusivity, and environmental awareness, the activity strengthened USM’s commitment to promoting cultural diversity, bridging communication gaps, and fostering active participation of all sectors in addressing pressing national issues.
