USM Delegation Earns Awards, Research Grants at International Conference in South Korea

General Marc M. Bangoy, a Senior High School student of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM), emerged as the top qualifier and grabbed the Silver Medal in the Olympic Recurve Under-18 division during the 2026 World Archery Asia (WAA) President’s Cup and Joint Training Programme held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from July 30 to August 2, 2026.
In the qualifying round, Bangoy, seventeen-year-old resident of Kidapawan City, delivered an outstanding performance by scoring 689 out of 720 points over 72 arrows shot from a distance of 60 meters, earning the No. 1 ranking in the Recurve Under-18 category. His impressive score placed him ahead of two Indian youth Olympic archers, demonstrating his consistency and precision on the international stage.
Bangoy carried his strong performance into the Olympic elimination rounds, advancing to the championship match against India’s Cherale Dnyanesh Balaji, the tournament’s third seed. The closely contested gold medal match showcased the determination and skill of both archers. Although Bangoy fought hard until the final set, he narrowly missed the gold by just one point, settling for the silver medal after an impressive campaign.
Bangoy was one of four Filipino archers accompanied by a coach, who represented the country alongside young archers from 19 different Asian nations in the four-day international event.
The program featured seminars on sports injury prevention, sports psychology, and sports nutrition, followed by the WAA President’s Cup competition.
Bangoy’s achievement marks a significant milestone for Philippine archery and highlights the growing potential of young Filipino athletes in international competition. His remarkable performance brought honor to the country, to the University of Southern Mindanao, and the City of Kidapawan.
