The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) welcomed an international delegation from Kenya on August 27, 2025, as part of the South-South Exchange Mission.
the mission aimed to spotlight innovations and economic practices in banana value chains. It also sought to promote sustainable agricultural development and inclusive agribusiness models rooted in Mindanao’s evolving landscape.
USM, as recognized as one of Mindanao’s leading institutions in agricultural research and innovation, was selected by MinDA to share its expertise in sustainable land management, nature-based farming systems, and banana tissue culture. During the engagement, Prof. Mel Chrisel Sales presented a study on sustainable soil management, providing highlight on practical approaches pertinent to tropical contexts.



The Kenyan delegation also toured USM’s innovation facilities to gain firsthand insight into the university’s research-driven solutions and community-based practices.
This collaboration underscores USM’s enduring commitment to advancing agricultural excellence, not only across Mindanao, but also through meaningful international partnerships that foster collective learning and global impact.
The visit was co-facilitated by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) under the Circular Economy in Aggregation and Industrial Parks (CAIPS) Programme, USM’s Office of International Affairs (OIA) led by Prof. Bryan Lloyd P. Bretaña, and Dr. Debbie Marie Verzosa, Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension (VPRDE).
