Rico John C. Gorieza, the Editor in Chief of The Mindanao Tech, the official student publication of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM), earned a spot in the Top Science Stories for Gawad Dalumat 2023 through his article titled, “Breaking Through the PH’s Adlay Productivity, USMian Breeds Five Varieties” on October 28, 2023, at Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City.

Gorieza received the medallion and cash prize as presented by DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr. and Undersecretary Maridon O. Sahagun during the ScienHayag Awarding Ceremony.

By presenting real-world stories shared by the public, the competition aims to spread scientific knowledge and promote a culture of innovation and resourcefulness.

Identifying the novel and most relevant paper during the Student In-house Review, Gorieza shared in an interview that he was inspired to write the article as a Microbiology student.

“𝘼𝙨 𝙖 𝙬𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧 [𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙣], 𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙟𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙢 𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙩𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨. 𝙄𝙣 𝙢𝙮 𝙘𝙖𝙨𝙚, 𝙬𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙡𝙡. He underscored.

Prof. Lloyd Anton Von M. Colita, The Mindanao Tech Adviser, wrote in his Facebook post: “𝙒𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙐𝙎𝙈 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝘿𝙧. Spearheaded by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI), this year’s nationwide journalism contest is guided by its theme, “𝙂𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙙 𝘼𝙡𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙜 𝙭 𝘿𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙢𝙖𝙩: 𝙀𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝘾𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙯𝙚𝙣 𝙅𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙢.”
