As part of its commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly techniques for weed control and vegetation management, the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) expressed its gratitude to the Provincial Government of Cotabato for donating 10 sheep, delivered on May 23, 2025.
In a formal letter sent to Governor Emmylou “Lala” Taliño-Mendoza, USM expressed its interest in exploring alternative methods of vegetation control on campus. “The University is seeking environmentally friendly and sustainable approaches to managing unwanted vegetation. We have identified that using grazing animals, such as sheep, could be an effective solution,” the letter stated.
Facilitated by Dr. Belinda Gornez of the Provincial Veterinary Office, the donation consists of five ewes and five rams, which will deployed in areas surrounding the College of Trades and Industries and the College of Human Ecology and Food Sciences.

The initiative aims to reduce the dependence of the campus on mechanical and chemical weed control modes while enhancing ecological balance. The project will serve as a model for other educational institutions pursuing sustainability.
