November 27, 2025
The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) participated in the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) Celebration held in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte on November 18–21, 2025.
The NSTW is an annual event that highlights the vital role of science, technology, and innovation in national development. This year’s exhibits highlighted innovations aligned with DOST’s four strategic pillars: Well-being, Wealth Creation, Wealth Protection, and Sustainability. The event featured scientific lectures and workshops, technology transfer demonstrations, commercialized technologies, technical tours, and various scientific fora.
Several DOST-supported technologies were also launched, including the Regional Yarn Production and Innovation Center (RYPIC)—a facility that connects local weavers to markets through advanced fiber processing systems—and the country’s first bamboo waiting shed featuring an octagonal jointing system, a patented innovation for strengthening bamboo structures.
University of Southern Mindanao President Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel attended the NSTW together with Dr. Debbie Marie B. Verzosa, Vice President for Research, Development and Extension, and Dr. Lydia C. Pascual, Director of the Research Development Office and focal person of the RYPIC facility being established in USM. The group visited the exhibits and attended the RYPIC launch in preparation for the opening of the USM RYPIC.
During the celebration, they also expressed support for DOST Region XII, led by Regional Director and USM Board of Regent Engr. Sammy P. Malawan. DOST Region XII was selected to spearhead the NSTW 2026 Celebration in General Santos City, where USM is expected to take an active role in supporting DOST’s initiatives and activities.
