The University of Southern Mindanao–Libungan officially opened a newly constructed five-classroom school building during a turnover ceremony on March 12, 2026, in Montay, Libungan, Cotabato.
Funded under the administration of Governor Emmylou “Lala” Taliño Mendoza, the ₱5-million project was implemented by Sandstone Construction and Supply, with Project Engineer Francis Calderero leading the construction.
Local officials, faculty members, and students attended the ceremony, including Libungan Mayor Angel Rose “Apple” Cuan and 1st District Representative Congressman Edwin Cruzado, who represented the governor.
In his welcome remarks, USM Libungan Director Gideon Sumayo highlighted the impact of the new facility, noting that it will serve around 700 students, particularly those enrolled in general education courses. He emphasized that the additional classrooms will help ease the shortage of learning spaces on campus.
Student leaders also shared their appreciation during the program. Speaking on behalf of the student body, Miguel Zaldariaga thanked the officials for their continued support for students’ needs.
“This project is more than an infrastructure achievement. It is a powerful symbol of hope, opportunity, and a deep commitment of our local leaders to education and community development,” he spoke.
A representative from the criminology students underscored the building’s importance for learners coming from outside Cotabato, saying, “This building is not only a help for the students of North Cotabato but also for someone like me who is from a faraway province.”
In his message, Congressman Cruzado reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting education projects in the province. He encouraged students to stay focused on their studies and make full use of the new classrooms.
Local officials also shared updates on ongoing developments in the area, including improvements in road access, water supply, and electricity, as well as plans for additional projects.
The ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting and the formal turnover of the building, which is set to be used by students in the upcoming academic term.
