Carmen, Cotabato – In its ongoing effort to empower local farmers and promote sustainable agricultural practices, the University of Southern Mindanao Extension Services Office  (USM-ESO), in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Carmen, conducted a hands-on training on organic herbicide preparation on July 11, 2025, at the Municipal Gymnasium in Poblacion, Carmen.

The training engaged selected high school teachers, members of the Rural Improvement Club (RIC), and 4-H Club members. Participants gained practical knowledge and tools to support environmentally friendly farming. This activity is part of USM’s “Going Bananas” Extension Project, an initiative that aims to enhance the livelihood of banana growers through improved organic practices, value-adding technologies, and sustainable enterprise development.

Leading the training was Science Research Specialist I, Rezin G. Cabantug, who served as the resource speaker. Cabantug delivered key insights on organic herbicide formulation and guided participants in preparing a ready-to-use herbicide for their own farms.

During the afternoon session, participants also tried banana wine processing. This hands-on experience introduced value-adding practices that support agri-entrepreneurship among local growers.

The event reinforced USM’s commitment to grassroots development and its goal of making science-based agricultural services accessible to rural communities. It also reflected LGU-Carmen’s strong support for sustainable agriculture and its advocacy for strengthening farmer capacities through collaborative, research-driven programs.
