Dr. Vicente T. Delos Reyes, a faculty member from the Criminal Justice Education of the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), attended the workshop titled: Strengthening Human Rights Education in Criminology Schools by the United Nations (UN) Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on May 27 to 28, 2025 a the Hive Hotel, Quezon City. 

Human rights education experts from the UN CHR discussed progress made in teaching human rights in criminology education in the Philippines. Meanwhile, the experts shared experiences and good practices and tackled future engagements, research and other initiatives to promote human rights-based approaches in criminology education.

In an interview with Dr. Delos Reyes, he shared that the workshop offers an opportunity for criminology educators to engage with evolving human rights issues. 

“It was also an opportunity for us to enhance our instructional materials, and promote a culture of justice and accountability among students as future custodians of peace and order”, he remarked. 

The training stressed that teaching human rights involves more than just going over legal frameworks; it also entails fostering an attitude of accountability, empathy, and respect for law enforcement procedures.” Dr. Delos Reyes added.

He then shared that the exercises during the workshop made him realize the importance of curriculum alignment and faculty development must be in line with national and international human rights norms in order to produce graduates who are capable and socially conscious.

The workshop, attended by deans and faculty members from universities/colleges offering Criminology around the country, aimed to get a broad understanding of how human rights education is being implemented. It was also conducted to build the knowledge and skills of criminology educators to promote human rights education in their colleges and universities.
