As the world continues to evolve through rapid advances in science and technology, research institutions play a crucial role in shaping solutions for a more sustainable and adaptive future. In pursuit of this goal, four faculty members from the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) joined the 7th International Research Conference on Innovations in Engineering, Science, and Technology (IRCIEST) hosted by Batangas State University – The National Engineering University, held on October 22–24, 2025, at the Pablo Borbon Campus in Batangas City.
With the theme “Engineering the Future: Transformative Research for Global Advancement,” the biennial conference served as a venue for researchers, educators, industry professionals, and students to present their work, exchange knowledge, and explore emerging trends that shape engineering, science, and technology education and practice.
Representing USM were Dr. Maricel Dayaday, Dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology; Prof. Renel Alucilja, Director for Planning; Dr. Josephine R. Migalbin, Professor VI of the College of Agriculture; and Mr. Roy C. Ricabar, Department Chair of Animal Science. Dr. Edward Barlaan, Professor Emeritus also participated virtually and presented his research paper during one of the technical sessions.

Serving as keynote speaker was Dr. Muhammad Qasim Rana from the University of Built Environment in the United Kingdom, who discussed “Redesigning the Future: Transformative Research in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.” In his message, as cited by Balisong Channel, Dr. Rana posed a question to the audience — whether they are ready for the challenges and opportunities brought about by Artificial Intelligence. He encouraged researchers to adapt to the rapid changes of modern technology and to rethink their roles in shaping future-ready innovations.
Organized by Batangas State University’s Research and Innovation Office, IRCIEST has become a reputable platform for fostering collaboration among local and international institutions. It provides opportunities for participants to engage in discussions on current scientific issues, share research methodologies, and develop partnerships that promote innovation-driven development.
Since its first installment, IRCIEST has aimed to bridge the gap between research and real-world application, encouraging participants to produce studies that respond to industrial and societal needs in the age of digital transformation. The seventh edition continued this mission by bringing together thought leaders and innovators who tackle critical areas such as sustainability, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, smart systems, and technological education.
The participation of USM faculty members in IRCIEST is seen as timely and valuable, especially as the university continues to move toward a stronger focus on innovation. By engaging in global research exchanges, USM strengthens its capacity to develop new ideas, technologies, and practices that can further contribute to regional and national development.
