Cuyapon, Kabacan, Cotabato – Faculty members from the Institute of Middle East and Asian Studies (IMEAS) and College of Business, Development Economics and Management (CBDEM) of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) conducted a training on Halal food handling for members of the Kabacan Moro Women’s Organization, Inc. (KMWOI) on July 5, 2025, at the Barangay Covered Court in Cuyapon, Kabacan, Cotabato.
The training aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of Halal and Haram principles while equipping them with the skills to prepare traditional Maguindanaon dishes in accordance with Islamic dietary laws. The USM faculty were warmly welcomed by Barangay Kagawad Dante B. Delson prior to the start of the activity.
A total of thirteen (13) participants attended the training. Resource speakers Prof. Sofia G. Molao and Prof. Norjaida D. Maliga provided a comprehensive overview of Halal and Haram principles within Islamic dietary laws. Discussions included ingredient sourcing, preparation methods, and proper storage to maintain the Halal status of dishes such as dudol, kumukunsi, and kagikit.
The training was facilitated by Prof. Analyn A. Gonzales (Project Leader, CEC) and Prof. April Geraldine M. Quiñonero from USM-KCC, one of the activity leaders for the project.
By promoting safe and culturally grounded food practices, the training not only supports the preservation of Maguindanaon culinary heritage but also empowers women with knowledge that can enhance their livelihood and uphold their religious traditions.
