April 22, 2025
To provide a more comfortable and enriching environment for the USM community, the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) held two groundbreaking ceremonies on April 15, 2025, at USM, Kabacan, Cotabato. These ceremonies marked the start of construction for two major projects: Academic Support Building, and Student Center Building.
The Academic Support Building, which will serve as the new Presidential Cottage, is set to become the official residence of the University President and Vice Presidents. With an allocated budget of Php 9,987,861.91, the project is designed to offer a functional and welcoming space for university leadership and visiting guests.
According to Engr. Renel Alucilja, Director of the Planning and Development Office (PDO), the proposal was first conceptualized in October 2024, after recognizing that the current cottage is likely over 50 years old and in urgent need of replacement.
During the ceremony, USM President Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel emphasized that the new structure is more than just a residence, it is intended to serve as a symbol of leadership and hospitality. He explained that the building will be open to visitors and will reflect the university’s values of transparency, service, and warmth.
Meanwhile, the Student Center Building, which will rise at the back of Office of Student Affairs, has an allocated budget of Php 8,068,664. It is envisioned as a dedicated space for student activities, learning, and engagement.
Hon. Ma. Alana Samantha Santos, the 3rd Congressional District of Cotabato Representative, expressed her admiration for the university’s continuous efforts to improve its facilities. She noted that not all institutions are fortunate enough to pursue similar projects. Furthermore, she expressed hope that the space would also benefit faculty and staff. She described the building as a symbol of courage, respect, and Cotabateño pride.

In addition, Dr. Pimentel shared that the Student Center is a long-held dream of the university, one that is especially aimed at supporting vulnerable and underserved students. He described it as a safe and nurturing space where students can feel valued and supported by professionals within the university. He also expressed his gratitude to Congresswoman Santos for her consistent support of the university’s development projects.
Present during the ceremonies were Cong. Santos, SK Provincial Federation President Karen Michie De Guzman, members of the USM Board of Regents, University Vice Presidents, the Infrastructure Project Monitoring and Evaluation Team (UIPMET) with Project Monitoring Office personnel, Office of Student Affairs team, representatives from Pastcar Construction and Supply Co., faculty members, staff, and students. Ultimately, these new facilities represent a significant milestone in USM’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, student welfare, and inclusive campus development.
