To promote sustainable and animal welfare-friendly poultry farming, the University of Southern Mindanao Extension Services Office (USM-ESO), through its CONNECT Project under the Learning and Development Program, conducted a training-workshop on Cage-Free Chicken Layer Production and Management on July 24, 2025, at the Extension Services Office Training Room in Kabacan, Cotabato.
The training aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of the fundamental principles and advantages of cage-free layer production systems. It covered key topics such as appropriate housing design and space requirements, feeding and nutrition strategies tailored to cage-free layers, proper health care and biosecurity practices, and sanitation measures. Participants also learned about good animal welfare practices, techniques to enhance egg production, and potential market and economic opportunities in cage-free egg farming.
The training was facilitated by Dr. Precious Amor Beso-Ferrer of the USM College of Veterinary Medicine, with support from the DA-Balindog Livestock and Production Center, which distributed ten (10) one-month-old chicks to each participant. Additionally, the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist of LGU Kabacan assisted in identifying the farmer-beneficiaries.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Glyn B. Gabano-Magbanua, Director of the ESO, welcomed the participants and underscored the importance of applying the knowledge gained to their farm practices.
“Ang aming opisina ay patuloy na magbibigay ng ganitong klaseng mga training para makatulong sa inyong kabuhayan. Sana ay inyong mapraktis ang inyong matutunan at, balang araw, ay makabenta kayo sa amin ng itlog,” she said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Debbie Marie B. Verzosa, Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension (RDE), acknowledged the collaborative efforts behind the initiative.
“Gusto naming iparamdam na ang USM ay nariyan upang tumulong sa komunidad. Nawa’y hindi lang kaalaman ang maiuwi ninyo—ang hamon ko, kung mabibigyan kayo ng 10 sisiw, sana pagbalik ninyo, bente na,” she encouraged.
This initiative is part of USM’s continuing commitment to empower local farmers, promote agricultural innovation, and support the socio-economic development of Cotabato Province through inclusive and responsive extension services.
