The University of Southern Mindanao-Extension Services Office (USM-ESO) conducted a specialized training workshop on March 12, 2026, to equip Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Extension (AgEx) and Agricultural Economics (AgEcon) interns with essential skills in newswriting, photography, and layout design. The initiative aimed to empower the next generation of professionals to effectively document and communicate grassroots stories with clarity and impact.
The training featured a series of technical discussions spearheaded by Prof. Anamarie B. Uyangurin and Mr. Jimwell P. Pande, Extension Editor and Staff.
“Not all stories are worth writing.” This was the central theme emphasized by Prof. Uyangurin as she underscored the importance of news values. She reminded participants that effective communication begins with the ability to discern information that is truly relevant, timely, and significant to the public. During her session, she deconstructed the fundamental structure of news and discussed how adhering to media ethics ensures that a communicator maintains the credibility and public trust necessary for impactful storytelling.
Transitioning from the written word to visual storytelling, Mr. Pande shared his expertise on capturing compelling images and designing professional layouts. He emphasized that blending high-quality photography with strategic graphic design allows communicators to bridge the gap between complex information and audience engagement.
“One must not only take a good photo but also learn how to integrate such images to create effective printed communication materials,” Pande expressed.
To apply these concepts, the interns participated in a collaborative workshop where they were divided into small teams to produce original content. The groups drafted news reports covering the event and designed creative posters using their own raw photographs to demonstrate their grasp of visual communication.
The workshop culminated in a comprehensive critiquing session where interns presented their outputs for professional review. This collaborative evaluation allowed participants to receive constructive feedback, highlighting the importance of visual balance and narrative clarity. By analyzing each other’s work, the interns gained a deeper understanding of how to refine their materials to meet industry standards.
By equipping these interns with a versatile set of communication skills, USM-ESO ensures they are prepared to navigate their future careers with confidence and precision. This commitment to professional development guarantees that these future leaders become proficient storytellers, ready to bridge the gap between technical information and the public with excellence.
