The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) received Certificate of Commendation from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Regional Office XII in recognition of its commitment towards internationalization of Philippine higher education and its exemplary performance in the globally-recognized rankings and ratings.

The award was given on August 08, 2025 during the occasion of the ASEAN Month 2025 opening ceremony at the Notre Dame of Dadiangas University, General Santos City. 

Part of the citation of the certificate says: The Commission on Higher Education Regional Office XII (CHEDRO XII) is proud of USM for their notable contributions to the field of higher education especially in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025 in the 1501+ bracket. 

Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel, the USM President, along with Prof. Bryan Lloyd P. Bretaña, the Office of International Affairs (OIA) Director, and Ms. Emily T. Montero, the Univeristy Public Relations and Information Office (UPRIO) Director, Ms. Rosiely M. Laco, the Executive Assistant of the President, received the award. 

In an interview, Prof. Bryan Lloyd P. Bretaña expressed deep gratitude to CHEDRO XII for the esteemed recognition. He acknowledged the crucial support of the commission and the collaborative efforts of other higher education institutions (HEIs) in the region. As the Council of International Relations Officers (CIRO)  President, he said that HEIs’participation has been vital in advancing the region’s internationalization goals for this year. 

“We are truly fortunate to have CHED’s support and the collective commitment of our regional HEIs, which significantly contribute to achieving our internationalization targets,” he stated.

At the same time as the awarding ceremony, the Ribbon Cutting for the ASEAN Expo took place, alongside a roundtable discussion focusing on key ASEAN priorities such as marine and coastal biodiversity, alignment with the SDGs, and inclusive development.
