The Department of Military Science and Tactics (DMST) Reserved Officers Training Corps (ROTC)  unit of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) presented its sponsors and confirmed new ranks to promoted ROTC cadets with Francisco Gil N. Garcia, PA (RES) as the guest of honor and speaker at the USM Parade Grounds, on March 27, 2024.

President Garcia congratulated the ROTC cadets and their supportive parents during his speech.

He compared the ways of living in their time as students with the ways of living of the new generation. He added about the additional challenges that students experience nowadays to wit, mental health, technology addiction, social justice, global conflicts, security threats, and climate change.

Dr. Garcia emphasized having courage in joining ROTC, overcoming fear, embracing change, standing up for what is right, taking risks, building resilience, inspiring others, and fulfilling self-potential. “You are one of the USM’s bravest for choosing to undergo ROTC; we are proud of what you have accomplished and the man or woman you will become after you undergo the training program”. He spoke.

As stated in the National Service Training Program (NSTP) Act of 2001, ROTC is designed to provide military training to tertiary-level students/to motivate, train, organize, and mobilize them for National Defense Preparedness. Today, the USM ROTC has 42 advanced officers and 541 Basic ROTC cadets.
