Dr. Jalaloden B. Marohom and Dr. Romiel John P. Basan, professors from the University of Southern Mindanao (USM), were selected and then participated in the 2025 Future Science Leaders Forum (FSLF) organized by the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) on October 9–10, 2025, at Acacia Hotel in Alabang, Muntinlupa.

Dr. Marohom and Dr. Basan, qualified in response to the NAST PHL invitation, that heads of institutions nominated emerging leaders from various scientific fields.

FSLF seeks to empower young Filipino science leaders by helping them strengthen their leadership skills and connect with a network of fellow leaders, mentors, and advisors.

The activity was composed of plenary sessions and workshops which cover topics such as building a culture of research, innovation, collaboration and partnerships, strengthening institutions, mentoring, and the relationship between science and society.

In an interview, Dr. Basan said that through the forum he learned the importance of self-awareness—knowing yourself, your purpose, what you do, and who you do it for. He added that the forum also emphasized that effective leadership requires patience, dedication, resilience, and creativity.

Listening to the stories of success from the resource speakers, who are accomplished academicians, made the forum a unique experience. Unlike traditional academic sessions, it focused more on personal journeys and insights that can help shape the future of science through building a culture of research, innovation, and strong institutions,” he underscored.

Also, Dr. Marohom said in an interview, that the forum emphasized the value of collaboration, linkages, and mentorship in advancing both individual careers and the national scientific agenda.

Their stories served as a powerful reminder of the role science plays in shaping communities and solving real-world challenges. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to be part of this transformative gathering. It was a true honor to be selected to take part in this forum and to now be counted among the alumni of NAST PHL,” he remarked.

He added that he was inspired by the insights and experiences shared by some of the country’s most respected scientists and academicians.

When asked of his learnings in the forum, he said:
“To be an effective leader, be teachable, patient, and open to collaboration. Praise in public and reprimand in private.”

NAST PHL is an attached agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) created by Presidential Decree 1003-A (P.D.1003-A) on 06 October 1976. It represents the nation’s commitment to science and is mandated to: Recognize outstanding achievements in science and technology and reward those engaged in research; Advise the President and Cabinet on science and technology matters; Promote scientific productivity through various projects and programs; Carry out initiatives expected of a national academy of science; and Oversee the operation of the Philippine Science Heritage Center.
