Jhesper Kloyd A. Valdez, a third-year Bachelor of Physical Education student from the College of Human Kinetics at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM), earned the 2025 Dr. Thomas L. McKenzie Scholarship, which the International Organization for Health, Sports, and Kinesiology (IOHSK) announced on October 24, 2025.

He was the only student from the Philippines chosen for this year’s scholarship. Joining him on the IOHSK roster of awardees were scholars from Chung-Ang University in Seoul, South Korea — Ji Yeon Lee (Doctoral Student), Junhee Lee (Doctoral Student), and Suhyeon Park (Master’s Student).

The Dr. McKenzie Scholarship and Grant Program has earned international recognition as one of the most distinguished awards in the fields of health, sports, and kinesiology. It is highly regarded by leading global organizations and academic associations for its excellence and contribution to these disciplines.

Dr. McKenzie, Professor Emeritus at the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences, San Diego State University, and Lifetime Honorary President of IOHSK, founded the IOHSK Scholarship and Grant Foundation in 2021. Since its establishment, the foundation has supported more than 100 students and faculty members through scholarships, research grants, and academic awards.

Valdez, who was also recommended by Dr. Ruben L. Tagare, Jr., proudly follows Fhonnalyn Eyong, a fellow student from the same college and a 2025 recipient of the prestigious Lucy Tierk Shoham Memorial Scholarship.
