Fhonnalyn Eyong, a student from the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of Southern Mindanao’s College of Human Kinetics, was announced as a 2025 recipient of the prestigious Lucy Tierk Shoham Memorial Scholarship on October 19, 2025.
The scholarship is generously funded by Mrs. Randi E. McKenzie, Emeritus Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at San Diego State University, and Dr. Thomas L. McKenzie, Professor Emeritus at SDSU and Lifetime Honorary President of International Organization for Health, Sports, and Kinesiology (IOHSK), in memory of Lucy Shoham, mother of Mrs. McKenzie. Lucy Shoham passed away in 2022 at the age of 100.
The Lucy Tierk Shoham Memorial Scholarships honor exceptional higher education students from low- to middle-income countries who demonstrate academic excellence and a strong commitment to advancing IOHSK’s mission in health, sports, and kinesiology.
Eyong, as a hardworking student and parent, she seeks the scholarship to overcome financial challenges and focus fully on her academic goals.
“As a mother, I’ve been working tirelessly during holidays and weekends to support myself and my daughter while being a diligent student during weekdays. Receiving this scholarship would be a blessing since I am the sole provider for my educational pursuits and my daughter’s educational needs,” she noted in her application.
Eyong, recommended by Dr. Ruben L. Tagare, Jr., was selected as the top recipient of this highly competitive scholarship, alongside two other outstanding scholars: John Ralph Tubon, an undergraduate senior in the Department of Fitness & Sports Management at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), Philippines, and Kazi Md. Azman, an undergraduate senior in the Department of Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation at Jashore University of Science and Technology, Jashore, Bangladesh.
