KABACAN, COTABATO — “A community needs assessment justifies our initiatives and ensures they yield a meaningful impact.”

This was the core message of Extension Services Office (ESO) Director and evaluator Dr. Glyn B. Gabano-Magbanua as she urged extension project leaders to conduct thorough community needs assessments for more impactful outcomes. She made the call during the 2026 Research, Development and Extension (RDE) Mid-Year Monitoring Review.

Held on July 13–15, 2026, the three-day event gathered researchers and extensionists from across the university to present their progress and highlight key milestones.

Presenters were categorized into Basic Research, Applied Research, and Extension, with panels of esteemed experts invited to evaluate project objectives and implementation timelines:

• Basic Research Evaluators: Dr. Florence Roy Salvaña, Dr. Elizabeth Molina, Dr. Lothy Casim, and Dr. Tamie Solpot (Basic Science | Assessment and Baseline Studies); alongside Prof. Ellen Joy Farala, Dr. Ruben Tagare, and Prof. Franz Bert Gomez (Social Science Research).

• Applied Research Evaluators: Dr. Jalaloden Marohom, Dr. Lydia Pascual, and Dr. Ma. Teodora Cabasan.

• Extension Evaluators: Dr. Glyn B. Gabano-Magbanua, Dr. Khris June L. Callano, Prof. Anamarie B. Uyangurin, Dr. Mary Joy S. Cañolas, and Engr. Willie Jones B. Saliling.

Under the Extension category, project and component leaders presented 18 initiatives spanning vital community themes, including environmental protection, livelihood generation, literacy, cultural preservation, social inclusion, and health and wellness. A key highlight of the sessions was the interactive question-and-answer portion, which sparked collaborative discussions on the importance of robust documentation for accurate reporting.

“Let us also be reminded to properly document our implementation processes so we can further justify our outputs and outcomes during the Year-End Review,” evaluator Dr. Khris June Callano emphasized.

The event concluded with all presentations successfully reviewed across the three categories. Beyond serving as a venue for quality assurance, the review fostered collaborative peer feedback to ensure all university initiatives achieve measurable, well-documented outcomes—underscoring USM’s commitment to institutional excellence and socially responsive development.
