
USM, DOrSU Sign MOA to Advance Research in Physical Education and Sports Science

Dr. Romiel John P. Basan, head of the Satellite Socio-Economic Research and Data Analytics Center (SERDAC) at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) and a faculty member of the College of Business Development, Economics, and Management (CBDEM), won Second Best Oral Presentation during the 56th Crop Science Society of the Philippines (CSSP) Scientific Conference held on June 9–11, 2026, at Quest Plus Conference Center, Clark, Pampanga.
Dr. Basan received the award for the paper titled “Willingness-to-Pay (WTP) for Community-Based Cold Storage Facility (CCFS) among Market Vendors in Rural Southern Mindanao: Implications for Sustainable Food Systems and Postharvest Innovation,” which he co-authored with Irish Jean T. Bongga.
During the event, he also presented another research paper titled “Do Nutritional Labels Matter in Cacao-Based Food Products? A Hedonic Pricing Analysis of Consumer Preferences Using Nutritional Label Data from Purchased Chocolate Products in Southern Mindanao,” which he co-authored with Bairuha C. Balah.
Both papers were presented under the Socioeconomics | Technology Development and Commercialization category.
Aside from presenting the papers, Dr. Basan also served as a judge in the Best Paper Competition under the Technology Extension, Dissemination, and Education category.
The Crop Science Society of the Philippines (CSSP) promotes research and knowledge sharing on crops, plants, and their environment. Through its programs and scientific gatherings, the organization supports innovations that improve agriculture, food systems, and the welfare of communities.
