In an inspiring collaboration between the Municipal Environmental and Natural Resources Office (ENRO), local non-profit organizations, and the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), the Local Government Unit of Columbio embarked on Phase II of the Comprehensive Assistance and Services for Authentic and Meaningful Action (CASAMA) Extension Project. This initiative aimed to empower the community with sustainable skills and alternative income opportunities.

Previous engagements organized by the College of Science and Mathematics had already laid the groundwork for the community to hone their skills in soap and Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) production. These endeavors were driven by the desire to offer the community forward-thinking avenues for income generation.

On March 22, 2024, participants showcased their proficiency in VCO production and soap making through a return demonstration. Representatives from the Department of Chemistry observed the process, providing valuable feedback to enhance product quality and efficiency. With an eye towards future scalability, participants received preemptive guidance and support, including insights from Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) staff on commercialization processes and documentation requirements.

Following the demonstration, Prof. Marivic D. Candari and Cherie C. Mangaoang, part of the CASAMA Phase II Project Team, alongside CSM Dean Philip Lester P. Benjamin, engaged with participants to develop strategic timelines and action plans. This coaching session aimed to empower participants to set clear objectives and organize their activities effectively post-training.

As the Phase II CASAMA Project concluded, a planning session underscored the collective hope that the community had been equipped with the resources and support necessary to thrive independently. Attendees expressed profound gratitude for the tireless efforts and unwavering assistance extended by the project team, reflecting the transformative impact of collaborative community initiatives.

Through initiatives like CASAMA, Columbio’s community is not only empowered with practical skills but also inspired to pursue sustainable avenues for economic growth and self-reliance.
