The extension project BIOnihan Para sa Kalikasan: Harmonizing Biodiversity Utilization and Sustainable Agricultural Practices of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) officially commenced through an inception meeting held recently in the Municipality of Columbio, Sultan Kudarat.

The meeting gathered key stakeholders and partner agencies to discuss the project’s objectives, planned activities, and collaborative strategies aimed at promoting biodiversity conservation while supporting sustainable agricultural practices. 

Dr. Florence Roy P. Salvaña, Head of the project, spearheaded the initiative in strengthening community-based environmental stewardship and sustainable farming. 

Representatives from different farmers’ organizations in Columbio actively participated in the meeting, along with representatives from the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist (OMAG), the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), and members of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU).Their presence highlighted the collaborative and multi-sectoral approach of the project in addressing environmental conservation and agricultural sustainability.

During the meeting, the project team presented the proposed extension activities that will be implemented throughout the project period. These activities include capacity-building initiatives, technical trainings, and IEC development designed to enhance the utilization of biodiversity resources while promoting environmentally responsible agricultural practices.

A key highlight of the meeting was the consultation with stakeholders regarding the relevance and suitability of the proposed trainings. Participants have shared their insights, needs, and recommendations to ensure that the activities align with the local context and effectively support farmers and community members in achieving sustainable livelihoods.

Dr. Cherie Cano-Manganaoang, Dr. Maria Elena Tanabe, and Prof. Bryan Lloyd P. Bretaña, the component leaders were present in the meeting. They will oversee the various technical and training components of the project. 

Together with the project are Department Extension Coordinators: Prof. Queennie L. Rufino (Chemistry Dept.), Prof. Benedict D. Entera (Physics Dept.), Prof. Jead M. Macalisang (Math & Stat Dept.), and Prof. Prince Nur-Hakeem N. Buisan (Biological Sciences Dept.)
