Experts from the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) led a specialized training on Early Literacy and Development Skills and ECCD Checklist Administration cum Basic Literacy and Numeracy on October 16–18, 2026, in Kidapawan City and General Santos City.

The training forms part of the extension project titled “Project REACH 12: Regional Empowerment and Advancement for Championing Literacy and Numeracy in Region 12,” led by Project Leader and Extension Services Office (ESO) Director Dr. Glyn B. Gabano-Magbanua.

The intensive training featured a three-day lecture session and workshop detailing various techniques and approaches in teaching English and Mathematics. This was spearheaded by a roster of experts from the university:

  • Dr. Glyn B. Gabano-Magbanua – “Basic Reading/Literacy”
  • Dr. Debbie Marie B. Verzosa – “Parts to Whole: Practical Approaches in Teaching Fractions” and “Measuring Up: Teaching Length, Perimeter, Area, Capacity, and Time”
  • Dr. Leorence C. Tandog – “Mastering the Basics: Effective Strategies in Teaching Whole Numbers Through the Lens of KS1 Teachers” and “Building Blocks: Teaching Polynomials and Equations”
  • Dr. Jupiter G. Pilongo – “Simplifying the Complex: Teaching Strategies for Rational Algebraic Expressions”
  • Dr. Leonard M. Paleta – “Beyond the Flat: Teaching Volume and Surface Area of 3D Figures”
  • Dr. Anna Jean S. Garcia – “Making Sense of Data: Teaching Graphs, Likelihood, and Data Organization”
  • Dr. Rowel P. Madio – “Exploring Space: Teaching Shapes, Lines, Solid Figures, Position, and Direction Through the Lens of KS1 Teachers”
  • Dr. Daryll Mae C. Mamon – “Teaching Statistical Measures and Probability”
  • Dr. Rowel S. Valenton – “Mastering the Basics: Effective Strategies in Teaching Whole Numbers Through the Lens of KS2 Teachers”
  • Dr. Lawton E. Yabes – “HOTS in the Age of AI”
  • Dr. Rona Jane F. Macalisang – “Angles and Areas: Teaching Geometric Reasoning in Junior High”
  • Dr. Jead M. Macalisang – “Exploring Space: Teaching Shapes, Lines, Solid Figures, Position, and Direction Through the Lens of KS2 Teachers”

The training, scheduled across different venues, capacitated Cotabato Province’s Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, and 3 teachers, providing both theoretical knowledge and practical pedagogical skills to ensure learning is effectively applied in the classroom.

Project REACH 12 is an initiative held in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division Offices of Cotabato Province, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato, General Santos City, Koronadal, Kidapawan, and Tacurong. It aims to enhance the foundational literacy, numeracy, assessment, and pedagogical skills of educators to improve student learning outcomes across Region 12.

Strategically extending university expertise to achieve the project’s targets, Project REACH ensures that quality literacy and numeracy education reaches the frontlines of basic education, fostering sustainable improvements in regional learning outcomes.
