The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) held a groundbreaking ceremony for its Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at the Swine Area, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

The facility will serve as the university’s central area for waste segregation, recycling, and composting, supporting the implementation of its ecological solid waste management program across all colleges and administrative offices.

In his message, USM President Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel acknowledged the efforts of everyone involved in the project despite the challenges encountered during its implementation.

“Despite earlier challenges, we now have come to the building of this facility. This will foster a culture of sustainability, where waste is segregated, recycled, and reused. We aim to benchmark best practices like waste-to-energy systems, making this a landmark and model for other schools. This is our legacy for future generations,” the President expressed.

Mr. Wendell Tanlangit, the Construction Supervisor of PASTCAR, expressed the company’s commitment to completing the project in accordance with the agreed standards.

“This facility is not just infrastructure; it stands for sustainability, innovation, and environmental care. As your contractor, we take responsibility to deliver this project with quality, integrity, and excellence. We are not just building a structure we are helping build a greener future for the whole USM community,” the supervisor emphasized.

Once operational, the Materials Recovery Facility is expected to provide a centralized area for waste segregation, recycling, and composting. The facility will also support the university’s resource recovery initiatives and the exploration of waste-to-energy technologies in the future.
