KIDAPAWAN CITY— To expand Magpet’s cultural tourism potential through the proposed extension project entitled “An Integrated Eco-Cultural Tourism Circuit and Model for Sustainable Resource Management,” the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) Extension Services Office (ESO) met with the Energy Development Corporation (EDC) on May 22, 2026, at Sudapin, Kidapawan City.

The meeting focused on establishing a strategic collaboration with EDC to align the university’s community-driven initiatives with the corporation’s environmental and corporate social responsibility goals for host communities.

Spearheaded by ESO Director Dr. Glyn B. Gabano-Magbanua alongside Monitoring and Impact Assessment Unit Head Prof. Anamarie B. Uyangurin, the meeting commenced with an introduction of Bongolanon’s cultural and language dynamics.

“We would like their languages lalo na ‘yung Bisaya at Manovo, to work together na walang mamamatay sa kanilang dalawa,” emphasized Director Magbanua.

The meeting transitioned into the project presentation. Key discussions centered on the project’s proposed initiatives on cultural preservation, agricultural productivity, and tourism development—all of which are strategically packaged based on the environmental landscapes and social realities in Bongolanon.

As the meeting concluded, EDC Corporate Relations Department Head Ms. Karen Kay Abarrientos expressed a positive outlook on the project.

“I think this is a good start for both of our teams because the project itself is well-packaged,” Ms. Abarrientos stated.

The envisioned partnership between the ESO and EDC marks a pivotal step forward for the project. By driving more contextualized and sustainable interventions, USM goes beyond language and cultural preservation in Magpet—it leverages these rich cultural assets as catalysts for tourism development, actively empowering a community poised to flourish through meaningful socio-economic growth.
