The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) geared up its working task force through a comprehensive meeting on April 22, 2026, at the Extension Services Office (ESO) TC room. This effort aligns with the University’s preparations for hosting the upcoming 2027 International Conference, which commemorates the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL 2022–2032)—a ten-year global initiative proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly.

The IDIL initiative is designed to draw attention to the critical status of indigenous languages worldwide and to mobilize resources for their preservation, revitalization, and promotion.

Dr. Antonio D. Igcalinos, President of 170+ Talaytayan MLE Inc., spearheaded the meeting. Central to the discussions were the proposed themes, potential key partners, planned activities, and the outlining of pre- and post-conference proceedings. To ensure a seamless and organized execution, the team also strategized on venue selection and scheduling.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Debbie Marie B. Verzosa (VP for Research, Development, and Extension), Dr. Glyn B. Gabano-Magbanua (Extension Services Director), Dr. Eimer M. Estilloso (Graduate School Dean), Dr. Donnie M. Tulud (MA in Language Teaching Program Head), and Prof. Anamarie B. Uyangurin (Extension Staff).

With the preparatory agenda successfully mapped out, the team is now set to facilitate communications to tap external expertise and seek sponsorships. A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) will follow to formalize collaborations and clearly define the roles of partner agencies.

This initiative underscores USM’s role as a key player in global efforts to safeguard linguistic diversity. As preparations move forward, the institution remains dedicated to fostering inclusive platforms where indigenous voices and knowledge systems are not only documented but celebrated for future generations.
