To address the emotional and psychological challenges experienced by Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) in Kabacan, the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) Department of Criminal Justice Education and the Department of Psychology spearheaded a community outreach initiative for PDL through Skills and Personality Development Training on April 10, 2026, at the Kabacan District Jail, Cotabato Province.

The activity marked the first component of the extension project, “Pathways to Reintegration: Empowering Persons Deprived of Liberty through Skills Training and Personality Development.”

The training featured a comprehensive series of lectures led by Prof. Jerose V. Llorente and Prof. Aprilone N. Molina. Central to their discussions were topics on Mental Health Awareness, Coping Skills, and Resilience. The session emphasized the need to recognize emotional challenges to foster a mindset geared toward positive transformation and successful social reintegration.

“Our goal is not just to provide information, but to offer hope to you; we believe that by strengthening your mind today, we are paving a smoother road for you to walk upon when you return to your families,” Molina shared.

Through this initiative, the university reinforced its commitment to community engagement by promoting mental well-being, personal growth, and reintegration readiness among PDL. The completion of the training underscored the university academic programs’ unwavering dedication to social responsibility and their vital role in fostering human dignity through community-based rehabilitation.
