The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) continues to hold its place as the Number 1 university in the region, based on the latest Webometrics rankings. USM also made a strong leap on the global stage. From a world ranking of #5968 last year, the university climbed to #3210 worldwide.
Webometrics.org ranks universities around the world by looking at how they perform in the digital and academic space. Focusing not only on research output, Webometrics tells a broader story about how universities share knowledge, influence society, and connect with the global community.
These are the ranking indicators of the Webometrics:
Visibility: Impact based on number of external referring domains (Ahrefs.com) – 50%
Transparency: Citations from top 310 cited researchers (excluding top 20 outliers) (Google Scholar profiles) – 10%
Excellence: Research papers in the top 10% most cited (2019–2023) (Scopus / Scimago) – 40%
Together, these indicators allow Webometrics to measure research and scholarly impact, academic openness, digital engagement, and overall performance across a university’s missions in education, research, and public service.
What Webometrics does not measure is also important. The ranking does not evaluate website design, user experience, visitor traffic, marketing strategies, or advertising activity. Instead, it focuses on meaningful academic presence and real global impact—showing how universities contribute to knowledge and society beyond their campuses.
