Aligned with the vision of USM President Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel of traversing the path of entrepreneurship and employment through innovation, the University of Southern Mindanao officially signed a Memorandum of Agreement together with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on December 4, 2025, at LJ Roadside view resort, M’lang, Cotabato.
Stipulated in the MOA are the roles agreed by both parties to play for the facilitation of the Philippine Government’s support on employment. The DOLE will support USM through providing policy directions and prescribe standards on employment, and set guidelines for the establishment and operation of Job Placement Office (JPO).
The JPO is a partner facility under DOLE often housed within schools, universities, or local institutions that works alongside the Public Employment Service Office (PESO). It functions to help students, graduates, and jobseekers connect with employers, access career guidance, and participate in job fairs.
As a counterpart, USM as a recognized JPO, is expected to be one of the Institutions to lead the facilitation and implementation of livelihood and self-employment programs and services, provide career advocacy and employment coaching services in partnership with other service providers, and initiate and organize job fairs pursuant to DOLE guidelines. All the services mentioned are free of charge.
In addition, USM received an award in recognition of its excellence, exemplary dedication, and commitment to the successful implementation of at least five DOLE programs.
Representing USM in the event were Director for Instruction Dr. Leonard M. Paleta and USM Guidance Counselor Imelda D. Silao, RGC.
