University of Southern Mindanao (USM) Intellectual Property, Technology Transfer, and Business Development Office (IPTTBDO), hosted the Innovation for Protection: A Patent Search Workshop to boost awareness of innovation and intellectual property, on September 23, 2025, at the Skyroom, Administration Building, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

According to USM IPTTBDO, there are innovations from universities that remain underutilized or unprotected due to a lack of awareness and expertise in patent search and analysis. Hence, the conduct of the workshop is expected to equip the faculty members with the necessary knowledge and tools to identify the novelty of their research, avoid duplication of work, and align their projects with the existing state of the art.

Dr. Jalaloden B. Marohom, the USM IPTTBDO Director, highlighted that in today’s innovation-driven research environment, it is crucial for academic faculty to understand the importance of intellectual property (IP).

The hybrid event, attended by faculty onsite and students online via Zoom, highlighted the role of patent searching in protecting research, promoting innovation, and supporting technology commercialization. The activity was organized by the USM IPTTBDO.
