The University of Southern Mindanao (USM), through its Intellectual Property, Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (USM IPTTBDO) hosted an Intellectual Property (IP) Awareness event on April 29, 2025, at the USM Commercial Building.

Organized in partnership with USMART TBI and SIKLAB ATBI, and supported by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), the event aimed to educate students and faculty researchers about securing intellectual property rights for their innovations.

Engr. Jessel O. Cofleros, Intellectual Property Field Operation Specialist of the Intellectual Property Satellite Office (IPSO) in SOCCSKSARGEN, served as the resource person. She discussed the fundamentals of the Intellectual Property System.

Dr. Jalaloden B. Marohom, IPTTBDO Director, emphasized that IP protection not only safeguards ideas but also opens opportunities for licensing, startups, and spin-offs, driving income generation, job creation, and economic growth.

In his opening message, he highlighted USM’s recent IP achievements with 107 identified IP assets, 40 assets filed for protection, and 10 already used by industries. Additionally, 234 individuals have been trained on IP and technology transfer, and 25 startups are being supported through USM’s Technology Business Incubators (TBIs). Just recently, USM signed Memorandum of Agreement with the Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) Network. This will support its commitment to IP protection and commercialization.

USM plans to continue promoting IP education with online awareness sessions, college workshops, face-to-face training, and hands-on sessions on transforming IP into business ventures, building a strong innovation ecosystem that bridges academic creativity with real-world impact.
