A total of fifty-six papers were presented and evaluated during the 2025 University of Southern Mindanao (USM) Research Development and Extension (RDE) Midyear In-house Review on July 17, 2025, at the USM Commercial Building, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

Out of 56 papers, 17 of these were Basic Research/Basic Social Research, 18 were Applied Research/Development, and 21 were Extension/Social Research.

Florence Roy P. Salvaña, PhD in Botany and Director of the USM Research Publication Services Office (RPSO), alongside Romulo L. Cena, PhD in Plant Breeding and former USM Professor, and Carlito P. Basay, PhD in Chemistry and Sustainability and a USM Instructor, served as evaluators for the Basic Research/Basic Social Research category.

For the Applied Research/Development category, the evaluators were Efren E. Magulama, PhD in Agricultural Sciences and Dean of the USM College of Agriculture, Adeflor G. Garcia, PhD in Soil Science and former USM Professor, and Jelly Grace B. Nonesa, PhD in Astrophysics and a USM Professor.

Meanwhile, Mary Joy S. Cañolas, PhD in Rural Development and a USM Professor, Dr. Moveta P. Balala, a former USM Professor, and Rowell P. Nitafan, PhD in Public Administration and a USM Professor, evaluated the Extension/Social Research papers.

In her message, Dr. Debbie Marie B. Verzosa, the Vice President for RDE, highlighted the significance of conducting in-house reviews. She also expressed gratitude to the panel of evaluators.

“This is a really good activity for the project personnel to adjust, to strategize, to be able to catch up if there are delays, and to continue working on their accomplishments,” she said.

“I also ask our evaluators to not have any reservation and give their honest evaluation to the presenters. This in-house review is not just monitoring, it is an opportunity for every one of us to learn,” The VPRDE ended.

The 2025 Midyear In-house review was conducted to evaluate completed and ongoing research projects, address challenges encountered during project implementation, identify technologies for verification, packaging, dissemination, and commercialization, and determine significant results for policy formulation and development.

Spearheaded by the Philippine Industrial Crops Research Institute (PICRI) lead by its Director, Dr. Tamie C. Solpot, this year’s in-house review is guided by its theme: “Evaluating research progress toward effective outcomes.”
