Two students at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) namely, Angelica R. Nebris (BEED) and Jeffrey B. Mendoza (MAEd Elementary) participated in the Virtual CommTECH Nusantara 2025 Exploring Indonesia Local Languages and Traditional Songs held virtually on July 7 to 18, 2025.

The program aimed to introduce various aspects of Indonesian culture to participants from around the world through local languages and traditional songs from across the Indonesian archipelago. It was further enriched with a range of art and cultural activities, like traditional dance and local cuisine. At the end of the program, participants showcased their creative ideas in a Virtual Project Exhibition.

In an interview, Nebris shared her realizations on how music can connect people from different countries.

Despite our different languages and backgrounds, we were able to enjoy, understand, and appreciate the same songs together. It showed me that music is a universal language that brings people closer,” She narrated.

“I also enjoyed learning some of Indonesia’s local languages, like Javanese and Bahasa. It made the experience more meaningful. I noticed that some Indonesian words are similar to Filipino words, which made me more curious to learn their language. It was interesting to see how our cultures are connected,” Nebris remarked.

Twenty-nine higher education institutions from around the world joined the virtual event, bringing together 122 participants.
