The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) hosted its two-day seminar-workshop titled “Empowering Educators: Crafting Learning Materials and Implementing Design-Based Action Research,” held on May 30–31, 2025, at the Graduate School, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

The event, accredited with 8 CPD (Continuing Professional Development) units, brought together educators from various institutions to enhance their competencies in developing instructional materials and conducting classroom-based research.

In his inspirational message, USM President Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel emphasized the critical role of teachers in shaping quality education. He encouraged participants to continue innovating their teaching practices.

Meanwhile, the workshop focused on three major goals:

  1. Developing instructional materials using multiple representations to improve student engagement;
  2. Creating meaningful math problems that promote critical thinking and problem-solving;
  3. Formulating relevant research questions for action research and design-based methods.

The event featured lectures, presentations, and hands-on workshops facilitated by experts in mathematics education, research, and instructional design. Participants also engaged in peer evaluations and group discussions during the seminar.

Dr. Philip Lester P. Benjamin, the Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, and the Conference Chairperson, led the initiative and highlighted the importance of building a strong research culture among educators.

Participants expressed appreciation for the seminar, noting its relevance in helping them respond to real challenges in their classrooms. The event concluded with the presentation and recognition of participants’ outputs and a reaffirmation of their commitment to continuous professional growth.
