Abaca is making a comback! |
|
“Farmers should not only know how to plant abaca; they should also know how to make it more profitable by value-adding,” urged Engineer Ramon M. Branzuela, the regional director of Fiber Industry Development Authority (FIDA) of Southern Mindanao. Engr. Branzuela was talking to the participants of the abaca production seminar convened by the Mindanao Baptist Rural Life Center (MBRLC) Foundation, Inc. in cooperation with Cotabato Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium (CARRDEC). The FIDA head said there are many uses of abaca, which farmers need to know. “What you just need is initiative,” he pointed out during the seminar which was held at Kinuskusan, Bansalan, Davao del Sur. The domestic abaca, core material of the world-famous Manila hemp used by most of the world’s ships in the early 1900s, remains a much sought-after commodity even with the advent of oil-based materials such as nylon and other polymers. “Especially today when the world is becoming environment-friendly,” said Engr. Antonio L. Doong, chief of fiber extension services unit. Abaca is the hardest fiber extracted from plants; it is three times stronger than cotton. |
