2016 State of the University Address PDF Print E-mail

Honorable members of the Board of Regents who are present, members of the Administrative and Academic Councils, faculty and staff, Students, friends, ladies and gentlemen, A PLEASANT and HAPPY MORNING!

More than two years have passed since I assumed the presidency of this University. And from one who has been given much, more will be demanded, and from one who has been entrusted with so much, much more will be asked.

Indeed, with the legitimate power vested in me as President of this University comes a very big responsibility!

Yes, my dear students, colleagues and fellow public servants, leading a university with a total land area of more than 5,000 has, with 1 main campus and 2 external campuses, and with more than 17, 000 students and over 600 permanent work force, together with contractual and job order personnel from diverse cultures, is no mean task!

It is both a big challenge and an opportunity. Challenge, in the sense, that I need to be very competent technically, conceptually, interpersonally and socio-culturally to be able to face squarely the different situations and conditions obtaining within and outside of the University, More importantly, I need to skillfully strike a balance between people and tasks to be able to maintain the equilibrium organizationally and operationally. On the other hand, it is both an honor and a rare opportunity to lead a premiere and reputable University dubbed as a Center of Excellence in Research in Region 12, a Center of Excellence in Agriculture, a Center of Development in Veterinary Medicine and in Biology, as a NAFES growth area, and one of the 27 leading Universities in the Philippines out of the 113 SUCs.

BIMP-EAGA International Halal Congress: An Academe Perspective PDF Print E-mail

Introduction

With the recent regionalization of countries where the perceived “development divide” of the 10 member countries of ASEAN will be bridged through the regionalization of production base and single market, there is also an expected growing demand for Halal Certified products. On top of this, the growing global Islamic economies have widened the outlook for the Halal industry. Hence, there is an increasing need for an aggressive advancement of the Philippine Halal industry to be able to cope with the international market opportunities and challenges.

With this, the University of Southern Mindanao, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture XI and XII, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Tourism and Mindanao Development Authority, will be spearheading the conduct of the International Halal Congress: Academe Perspective with the theme “Integrating HEIs in the Halal Value Chain” on March 1-3, 2016 in Davao City, Philippines.

This international event aims to bring together stakeholders from the academe, the research community, the industry, and the government sector from the member countries of the BIMP (Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines) sub-region for the presentation of key topics that will contribute to improved knowledge and strategies for the development of a robust Philippine Halal market. Specifically, the forum will highlight the role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and S&T/R&D sectors in harnessing the Philippines Halal market, and will showcase as well the BIMP-EAGA and ASEAN cooperation framework through the “Big Brother” approach wherein our neighboring countries with advanced Halal industries will share their respective experiences, policies, requirements, standards, and quality assurance in the Halal industry.
